New Libby sharing agreement with Scenic Regional Library

In exciting news, the MLC has a new Libby borrowing arrangement with Scenic Regional Library (SRL). Our MLC patrons can now add Scenic Regional as a card to their Libby accounts and borrow from SRL's collection, without having an SRL card. This gives our patrons - and theirs - access to even more digital titles!

Construction is underway for the new Brentwood library!

Despite the heat, more than fifty people showed up on Tuesday night, June 24th, for the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Brentwood Public Library at 2201 S. Brentwood Boulevard. The crowd included Library board members, Brentwood city officials, a state Representative, representatives of the companies involved in the design and construction process…and patrons of the Brentwood Public Library.

Ed Wright, Jr, president of the Library’s board of trustees, began the ceremonies by quoting Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu who said, “The longest journey begins with a single step.” “This has been a long journey and it’s been filled with a series of single steps.” Wright said. “Of course, a major step on this journey was the passage of Prop L a year ago by an overwhelming margin. Tonight is the next big single step—groundbreaking.”

Wright recognized the tireless efforts and work by Library Director, Gina Gibbons, and her staff along with the volunteer members of the library board. Also in the crowd were many former library board members who had been part of the project’s beginnings years ago.

The support of public officials was recognized with the presence of Brentwood Mayor David Dimmitt, current members of the Board of Aldermen, City Administrator Bola Akande, and former alderman and library liaison, Brandon Wegge. Brentwood resident, BHS graduate, and current state Representative Ray Reed was also present. Dan Fitzgerald and Regina Gahr represented the Brentwood Historical Society, which will have ongoing exhibits and events at the new library.

Wright thanked the outstanding professional contributions of the design firm Arcturis Architects and Owner’s Representative Navigate Building Solutions. “They helped us lay people become familiar with the whole process.” Finally, Greg Zavaglia, VP of Operations for ICS Construction Services, spoke about the project. “We’ve worked in Brentwood before and we’re very happy to be back. It’s quite thrilling to be working on such a creative and community-oriented endeavor.” Greg commented.

Construction work began the next day, and it is projected to take 12-14 months before completion. At that time, there will be another gathering to open our new facility. Hopefully, the weather will be better but we’re sure the enthusiasm will be just as hot.
